This beguiling scene of sailing boats is painted with post-impressionist freedom by the leading modern British artist Ronald Ossory Dunlop (1894 - 1973) an oil painter famous for capturing his surroundings ‘alla prima’, or in one sitting.
Working in a bold, bravura style, Dunlop favoured rapid execution of a canvas or board, applying undiluted paints with a palette knife or sable brush. As a result his landscapes and seascapes are impulsive and vigorous and the colours vibrant and glowing.
Dunlop became a member of the New English Art Club in 1935 and a Royal Academician in 1950. His works are much collected and can be found in the collections of the Tate Gallery and The National Portrait Gallery.
